So…the first live show with 12 of the Top 36 Performing. Honestly, I was pretty disappointed!
Click here for a recap (In order of performance)and their individual performances!!
Jackie Tohn – “A Little Less Conversation” by Elvis Presley
Jackie is a strange one for me. Her song choice was AWFUL. I mean, you just don’t sing Elvis. Her second mistake was her horrendous outfit, which I was glad Simon commented on. I didn’t think she did a good job. I think she’s going to try and play on this I’m the quirky, rocker chick but I just don’t think she’s strong enough to compete.
Ricky Braddy – “A Song for You” by Leon Russell
Ricky was one that we didn’t see too much of during the audition/Hollywood week process. He’s got a nice voice but I don’t know if this is the right show for him! Don’t I sound like I know what I’m talking about? Seriously, great voice. I agreed with Simon though, he definitely lacks that “Star” quality.
Alexis Grace – “Never Loved a Man” by Aretha Franklin
So I thought this was going to be horrible, but it wasn’t half-bad. Alexis is cute, has a great voice – she just needs some SUN!! She did a decent job – going 3rd after the first 2 BORING performances at least we know have been a little impressed!
Brent Keith – “Hicktown” by Jason Aldean
I like Brent but if you are going to start off as county – then you are going to have to ride that county wave each week! During Broadway week, or Love songs of the 70s week! The judges reamed him for being “safe” – - I didn’t think it was safe but I do think there are strong county songs that Brent could have performed.
Stevie Wright – “You Belong to Me” by Taylor Swift
Aww..Poor Stevie! I felt bad for her as I was listening. The whole song was horribly out of tune and the opening verse was WAY too low! I don’t know if she has the range for that song. Taylor Swift songs have a lot of words and don’t allow for good breath support and I think that showed. Once the judges started, I felt even worse for her. Like Simon said, you can take this experience and run with it. Poor Stevie!
Anoop Desai – “Angel of Mine” by Monica
Anoop….I like Anoop but like the judges said, it was just a weird song choice. Hopefully he’s popular enough to make it through because he has a strong voice. I had high hopes when he said he wants to sing songs that people don’t sing. It’s so easy to sit and home and question song choice – so come on Anoop! Make up for it next time!
Casey Carlson – ”Every Little Thing She Does is Magic” by The Police
It’s a HUGE pet-peeve of mine when performers change the sex of the song. So Casey, took a great song and repeatedly said “Everything little thing HE does is magic”….come on! What’s that?? I was glad when Simon said that she shouldn’t have been allowed to sing that song. I think Casey is done – I honestly didn’t think she should have made it out of Hollywood. I guess we’ll just have to wait for her next bikini calendar.
Michael Sarver – “I Don’t Wanna Be” by Gavin DeGraw
So everyone likes Michael Sarver! He’s the guy next door, normal guy. He seems to be a fan favorite already. I thought it was decent but in my mind I was expecting a county song to come out of Michael. It wasn’t horrible, not great. Like Simon said, he seems like a nice enough guy that hopefully that can get him through to see if he’s really got it. I’m not 100% sure about him yet.
Anne Marie Boskovich – “Natural Woman” by Aretha Franklin
Anne is another one that I feel like we want her to be better than what she is. It was okay…The “old” point that the judges were making didn’t really bother me too much. I thought her outfit was bad, too tight! Clearly she has a cute figure, I don’t think she needs to cram herself into a dress like that to prove the point.
Stephen Fowler- “Rock With You” by Michael Jackson
Stephen…I was a little surprised at the song choice. I didn’t think it was the end of the world but I did agree that it didn’t show his personality. I like Stephen, let’s hope he gets some votes and can make it through to the Top 12. I think he’s got a nice voice and a cool personality!
Tatiana Del Toro – “Saving All My Love For You” by Whitney Houston
Don’t we all want Tatiana to fail?? She just has such a CRAZY look about her. I guess she realized what a freak she looked like during Hollywood week so she was overcompensating tonight to calm herself down. Tonight she looked like at any point she could just snap. She sang Whitney, which I’m strongly opposed to anyone doing. It was decent but let’s hope she’s voted off before the Top 12.
Danny Gokey – “Hero” by Mariah Carey
Thank goodness for Danny! He saved what was an otherwise boring opening night of Idol. I love his story and his voice is amazing! I can’t imagine that he wouldn’t be the Top Male Vote getter of the evening. Great Job Danny! I think Simon was trying to be a little reserved, I mean you can’t be perfect out of the gate!!

the producers of American Idol are obviously singling out Danny Gokey as their favorite, but i would like to see him win so i don’t mind
