After a powerful 8.3 magnitude earthquake rocked the coast of Samoa, it triggered a deadly tsunami.
The Pacific tsunami has killed a total of 149 people so far, 22 in the US Territory of American Samoa. The waves surges reached 15-20 feet in places on the island.
The region was rocked again yesterday by a 5.5 magnitude quake, this one however didn’t prompt a Pacific Tsunami Warning.
President Obama has mobilized FEMA and first responders to move into the region. “I’ve declared this a major disaster to speed the deployment of resources and FEMA … is working closely with emergency responders on the ground, and the Coast Guard is working to provide immediate help to those in need”, said the President.
American Samoa is a tiny U.S. territory and it is home to about 65,000 people. Watch the clips from the region, after the tsunami waves struck the island.
