If you are a fan of the #1 soap in Daytime…then you may have mixed feelings about the “mustache” and his exit from Genoa City.
Eric Braeden, the 29 year veteran of Y&R, sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss the departure of “Victor Newman”.
You taped your last episode on Sept. 23. Was that the way you wanted Victor to go?
No. It was rushed. It was obviously meant to intimidate. It was obviously done with enormous forethought to coincide with the end of the 26-week cycle. Essentially that is what the business is doing now and has been doing for a while. And quite frankly, it’s outrageous. When I sign a three-year deal, I’m obligated to fulfill that deal. The producers, however, can come to me after a half-year and say, “We’ve changed our minds.” Where in the world of business does this kind of contract exist? Do I blame the people for wanting to squeeze as much out of us as they can? I do not. The question is, when do you squeeze too much?

Would you do another daytime drama?
I doubt that. Never say never in this business or in life, but I doubt that.
What does this say about the state of the industry when a production company is asking the star of the No. 1 show in daytime to take a pay cut? Should everyone be worried?
Yes, though it depends on what the star does. All options are open right now. What can I tell you? I know there are certain economic realities that dictate the actions they are taking right now, but the manner in which its being done is most insulting.
As of today, are you willing to take what Sony offered?
No. There is no appreciation of the fact that I’ve been an important part of the show for 29 years that has been no. 1 in the ratings. That’s extraordinary. So to be dealt with in a perfunctory matter as if you had just known these people for a few months is what is most offensive. This is a certain corporate culture now that is very deleterious.
How is Victor written out after his heart transplant? He’s been painted into such a dark and irredeemable place. Was this done to scare you?
Victor and Nikki go to Europe somewhere, Belgium or whatever, to some rehabilitation clinic. When I watch the show I realize—boy, oh boy—this exit was all calculated! They have now painted Victor Newman so black. He’s now killed this Colleen girl. He is responsible for the demise of everything. What he did do is hire that girl [Patty] and give her plastic surgery to get even with Jack Abbott. They’ve totally forgotten that Adam was gaslighting Ashley—now Victor’s held responsible for it. Jack Abbott is totally relieved of any kind of responsibility. It’s all Victor! They have forgotten all the backstory in order to make a rush to judgment. What they wanted to do—I’m thoroughly convinced of it—is make Victor look so bad to the public that the public will say, “Let him die.”

If Victor leave the show that is it for me. I have no reason to watch it. He make the show. How can you write a storyline about Adam killing Ashley’s baby and let him take someone else baby and give it to her. That is mess up. He walking around like he have not did a thing. November 2, 2009 will be my last time watching it.

I can’t beleive they would ever even think about getting rid of THE eric braeden and THE victor newman. The Melody Thomas Scott contract negotiation was one thing, the prospect of loosing Nikki was it for alot of people, thankfully they saved their ratings for a while, but now Victor Newman? Nikki is one thing, Victor is entirely different, say goodbye to your viewers Y&R, Victor was the only thing that kept the show alive during this Days of our lives storyline phase, but now that he might be gone, good luck…all I can say is if Eric Braeden is gone, I’m gone. Save the mustache!

As stated above, unrealistic story lines have reduced my watching the show and if Victor goes, I go with him. The whole Adam and Ashley thing is just so ridiculous. Are these the same writers from years past? Can’t be, just cannot be. So sad.
Sony always threatens to kill the best characters to intimidate them to sign contracts for less than than the star is worth. I promise I will not watch if they take Victor off. I can’t imagine what it is doing to morale around the set with other actors.
I’ve been watching Y & R since the very first show. I remember Victor when he was married to Julia and had the cage in the house! I thought that was a stupid story line, but his character really evolved into someone you could love and hate at the same time. He gave Victor depth, and he and Nikki are the backbone of the show. These are tough times, but if this genre is going to survive, the powers that be need to preserve their ratings by keeping the actors who portray the main characters on the show! This is lunacy!
I have been watching this show for the past 25 years and have been sooooo disappointed with with the way the storylines have been. Right from Ashely/Sharon… Adam/Dr. Taylor…. and then killing off Colleen when she was just starting to get a good role again with possibly hooking up with J.T…. Now killing off a LEGEND in Victor…. ludacris!!!!! I heard the original writer passed away recently but I NEVER thought they would replace him with a writer who’s storylines are soooo far fetched that I have gone from watching EVERYDAY to whenever I get around to it!!! VERY SAD!!! Victor goes….. so do I!!
Victor might as well cut out the lights on Y & R, because if he is no longer on the show, I as a 29 year fan , will be watching something else on TV.

Victor and Nikki make Y & R. The storylines have been so dumb, I realize it is a soap but the Ashley/Sharon baby story is so unrealistic. I have been watching this soap since the late 70’s when I was only 12 years old. If Victor leaves that will be it for me and I will NOT watch any longer. This is a very selfish move for the network to treat all the fans that have been watching the show for so long to get rid of Victor. Not only selfish but so stupid that it will end of like Guiding Light.
I despise the part that Adam plays. Now that Victor is leaving I certainly will not care to see it again. The writers have created a stupid role for Adam that doesn’t seem logical for an intelligent person. It plays on the intelligence of an individual. No one likes to watch a story that is so stupid. I am sure that the departure of Victor will bring the ratings down. Do not try to get rid of Nikki either. That is another mistake.

I have been watching this show since its conception, and I have loved it for almost that long….ALMOST. The past year has been absolute torture! Over the years, I even came to relate so well to the characters and stories that I could project their course and development months in advance. I even created one key character for the show during my early days as an actor in hopes that I would be fitted for the role (Malcolm Winters portrayed by Shemar Moore). I submitted my synopsis for the character via Eric Braedon who I met at a Good Housekeeping convention in 1993. So while my love for Y&R is great, my patience with the ridiculously substandard and unintelligent writing over the past 16 months is hereby exhausted. Eric Braedon as Victor Newman is the heart of the show. The ongoing dynamic between him and Jack Abbott (brilliantly portrayed by Peter Bergman) has been the pulse of Y&R for over twenty years! He is a key element in this yin and yang that has kept the show on top for almost two decades! For the writers and producers of Y&R to so brutally dismiss the great actor’s contribution (past and ongoing) to the show’s success is as unforgivable as their equally blatant disregard for the wants of its viewers. I earnestly implore the decision makers of CBS and Y&R to swiftly re-evaluate their flawed judgment in letting Eric Braedon go and in how far gone the show’s pointless writing has become already. Return Y&R to the high quality entertainment that put it on top, and retain and reward the elite actors that kept it there! It’s not too late! Do the right thing before Y&R loses not only this devoted viewer but millions of others now disgruntled on the fence!
The show has lost it! I quit watching recently because it is awful. Abby and Phillip are you kidding me – lose them. I think the show will be off the air soon. Too bad.

I think the writers have gone all crazy….The soap is today what is because of Victor.HOW could you let him go. Give him what he deserves because he is the best actor in that show..Fire ADAM or Amber,but not Victor. I, like so many others, have been watching the young and the restless since I was a young girl..(My mother recorded over my snow white VHS with a y&r episode..Ive been hooked ever since). HOWEVER, lately this show has sucked. The actor playing Abby is HORRIBLE, stories are going anywhere, there is no suspense, no DRAMA…..if you get rid of the victor newman character, who is going to rival jack, who is going to be the villian/lover boy that we all have grown to love? BRING BACK DRU!!!!! WHO ARE THESE WRITERS?? Im already beginning to decrease the time I spend on y&r…..getting rid of Victor is something that you cant afford to do. Continuing with your current writers is something that you cant afford to do!!!

I have been watching this show for 30 years. I can’t believe the writers would even consider writing Victor Newman out of this soap. He is the Young and the Restless!!!!!!!!!! If Victor gets written out I will never watch this show again.
I have been fan of Y&R for over 20 years and I never thought I would see the day that Victor Newman would be written out. I have discussed this with many of my coworkers who are also devoted fans of Y&R. It’s a concensus that we all will stop watching once Eric Braeden is gone. He made Victor Newman someone to love, hate or just appreciate, so a recast is not the answer. If the Bells want to save Y&R, they better think fast to save Eric Braeden. Stop wasting money on no-talent actors like the ones playing Abby, Phillip and Adam. The story line with Adam gets more ridiculous and less believable with every stunt that he pulls. Writers give us a break; intelligent people do watch soaps.

I cannot understand why you would not give EB what he wants and deserves. The show will probably fail and EB has been hurt by this event and even if you want him back, he will not be so happy to return. Your Y&R fans will certainly miss him and eventually there will no longer be a show that is worth watching. Hopefully you will reconsider and offer him what he justly deserves. Not only will the fans be thrilled to have him back, but I am sure all the cast will be in favor also.

Sounds like Days of Our Lives when they sent John and Marlena (their equivalent of Victor and Nikki), to Switzerland for John’s rehab at a clinic there. Hey, maybe it’ll be the same clinic and a new reality show (which are popular now), called DAYS OF OUR RESTLESS OLDIES will be created??? I love Y&R and will continue watching, but will miss Victor. Love how Michael and Lauren have powerful scenes, but remain a strong couple.
Hopefully it’s not too late to stop this demise of Y & R. Thousands of fans are pledging to stop watching Y & R if Victor the character is written out of the shop. And I am one of those long-time loyal fans. I’m sure that sponsors won’t be please with losing thousands and thousands of fans.
Eric Braeden is the heart of the entire show and his actions often lead to the many reactions and scenes for weeks to come. If Eric Braeden “Victor” is taken off of the show than you just get ready for Young and the Restless to follow Guiding Light right off of daytime television. Just like Victor told you all about Nikki, people relate The Young and The Restless with certain characters and if they are not a part of the show than the show does not need to continue to air. Think about what you have done, no Victor no support from everyone who loves him and considers him the “heart and soul” of the show.

I’ve been watching Y&R with my mom since I was 10, almost 18 years now. Just like the many fans above have stated, Victor is Y&R. After Nov 2nd, I have no reason to watch this show. He makes the show interesting and connects ALL the characters. I personally think that CBS is not being wise with how they spend their money. You spend money on characters that make you money, give you ratings that give you your salary and clearly, people love “the man with the mustache.” Not smart CBS, not smart.

I echo everyone else’s sentiments in that “killing” Victor Newman off is one of the dumbest moves on Y&R. Jack vs. Victor is one of the greatest rivalries in daytime drama history. I literally grew up watching Y&R and not having the “:moustache” in Genoa City is a big mistake. While I agree with Adrianne Franz on her take with Eric Brandern handling contract negotiations, it was still a drastic move on the producers’ part with so much other dead weight on the show (ex: Adam, Abbey, Gloria, and Jeffrey).
If Eric goes, I go. Sony and the executives at Y&R you did NOT succeed in making me believe that Victor held complete culpability for the darkness that has happened in GC. The writers and the executives who concocted the most insulting and outlandish story lines ever, while side lining people like Christian LeBlanc and all of the rest of the talent you sidelined. How dare you, Sony, first try to get Melody Thomas Scott off of the show and now Eric. They and Jeanne Cooper are the people who every story is sprung from. I will go further. If you do not get Eric Braeden back, and you know you can if you treated him with the respect he deserves, I will not watch another Sony owned Movie, T.V show, or electronic device. It’s been announced that Victor’s last air date is Nov. 2, doesn’t seem that can be changed as the actor has already finished up those scenes back in Sept. I grew up watching GL, ATWT & Y&R with my grandparents and then my mom. It was really heartbreaking to see GL canceled, the cast felt partly like family after 35+ years of watching them. Now with the exit of the characters Victor and Nikki, I know many of the older viewers will no longer watch, including myself. It’s in my opinion since Bill Bell passed away, Y&R has completely and totally bombed on most story lines. The only reason it keeps it’s ratings when other soaps don’t is because it plays so late in the day and in TWO time slots. Other soaps don’t have much of a chance in this economy because they play early in the day when everyone is at work. Women can’t afford to stay home anymore, therefor the ratings are constantly falling. I’d say another 5-10 years, there will be no more daytime soaps, if that long. Just stupid game shows and fake reality crap TV.

The more I read regarding the departure of Eric Braeden the madder I get. I think the way CBS is doing Eric is so distasteful and dirty. I too, have watched Y&R from the beginning. Fans have watched Eric breathe life into the character of Victor. I don’t think CBS realizes the seriousness of what they are doing by allowing Eric to walk away from Y&R. You can bring all the mystery men and write till the cows come home, but without Eric you are spinning your wheels. I spend at least an hour a day trying to reach someone that can rethink this mistake.
I have heard all kinds of reasoning for the writers to do this to Eric. One is CBS is behind the writers wanting them to write these stupid storyline so Y&R will fail and be replaced with Reality TV. At this point in time I am down on CBS and would welcome all of the fans of this program to tune in to other channels. Perhaps the writers can take part of what would have been Eric’s salary and purchase a new briefcase
for Pauls metal briefcase he has been carrying around for years. Are your writers so stupid to think we fans don’t notice such things. Your storylines as of late stink and so is the way you all have prejudiced fans against Victor by making his last days
into such a dark and evil character. Is this the thanks he gets after 29 yrs.
I am through with Y&R and CBS. Come on fans and rally behind Eric who is Y&R.
Eric has been forced to wrap and now we are going to wrap Y&R and if it is up to me CBS, Sony and the lot……No more of Y&R for me………

Amber girl, let me tell you something. First off, I don’t even know your real name. That’s how much I care about your character on Y&R, You are any of the cast can go, but the fans of Y&R realize you are part of a cast, however we can do without you, but cannot do without Eric.

Even watching the Young & Restless, I can see what I predicted in August. On my Y&R chat site I said that Y&R was making Victor crash & burn. “They are kicking him out” I said. The way he is now in his Hospital bed after receiving new life, the Victor I know would not be saying to Ashley “I don’t give a damn about the Abbott’s!” Do NOT think that your audience has such a low I.Q. as to not figure out that you quickly painted him in a corner and hoped we would all wish he would die. You were so very, very wrong. As I said in another post, cut off the head and the body will die. Well Victor Newman,along with his best friend Katherine and the love of his life Nikki, is the head of the Young and the Restless. I have read countless interviews and every daytime actor covets the Victor Newman role. So unless you change you minds and you know you can Sony and Y&R, and you have indeed severed the head of the show, then the body will indeed dies. You have asked waaaayyyy too much of you fans, following the show through the worst spring and summer I have ever seen and I remained loyal. No more. Bring Eric Braeden back for no other actor will EVER be able to take that role and replace him, or I will make good on my promise to not only quit watching the Young & the Restless but to boycott anything with the sorry Sony name on it.

The show has been one of my favorites for years BUT it is getting ridiculous. The Ashley baby story is just too far over the top. They killed off Brad and Colleen and now they are letting the star of the show leave on bad terms. This is the end of the road for me. I will miss seeing Nicki, Nick, Sharon , Jack and Ashley. But if Victor goes there is no story as far as I am concerned.

I have been watching the Y&R since in the 70’s and I know that if you let Eric (Victor Newman) leave this show, so will all of your viewers. It happened on Santa Barbara and it will happen on the Y&R. Greed will get you no here. Mr. Bell would be very disappointed if he were still living. I am an avid fan and I have watched this show almost everyday since way back when. Just will not watch the show anymore if Victor leaves. I agree with everyone, they should have got rid of Adam months ago. And how did Ashley suddenly get sane, after being almost a lunatic. I only hope the “soap” people realize what a big mistake they are making And as for Adrienne Franz she should have been off the show 2 years ago. And besides I still have not forgiven them for breaking up Nick and Sharon, so it is time for me to go too.

Something has changed at Y&R and it is not for the better. I have been a viewer for almost 30 years and during that time you have tackled some very timely and pertinent issues. Always seeming to be responsible. You do a storyline on Organ donation and then you have one which has a women thinking she is pregnant and then steal an-other’s baby. How responsible is that? For those of us with half a brain it is not believable and off-putting. For those out there with potential delusions it is very irresponsible. Get out of it ASAP. And now Victor and Nikki. The writers who have been around had better explain to the newer ones that some characters are indispensable. Get back on track and get real!!
I am very sad to hear that Eric Braeden will be leaving the show. Ever since the new writers following Bell’s death, the show has had silly story lines and it does not bother me anymore if I miss it. But now, with Victor leaving it won’t be worth watching.
I`ve only been watching the show a few years` but the Newman family makes the show for me. I luvvv Victor and his son Nicholas. This is just terrible. I probably won`t watch very much without him because Adam gets away with dum things and is never punished. It`s a bit unrealistic. Victor is “THE” man and always will be!1!1

The viewers haven’t lost interest in Victor. Apparently, the mucky mucks want to focus on the younger actors. The storyline is not nearly as good as it once was. There are issues that go unresolved, whereas in the past, the soap opera would take you to the truth at the end, but what about poor Estella sitting in prison? The storyline ended instead of being resolved. I hope that an agreement will be reached eventually and that Eric will come back as Victor, because quite frankly, once he’s gone, I will tune in on occasion, but I’m fed up and sickened so that I won’t be watching on a continuous basis any longer.
My husband and I watch this show faithfully, actually I T-bow it everyday and we watch it when he gets home togather and that ’s our tv for the day … if victor or nikki leave the show WE WILL NOT WATCH THIS SHOW AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

For the last 2 seasons the quality of writing and story line has declined very badly.

I’m a 3rd generation watching this show. I’m 23 yo and have been watching since before i can remember. Eric leaves the show, Then me, my mother and grandmother will no longer be watching. Whats the point? Im broken hearted. Any way us the true fan can start a massive petition? When Victor leaves I will no longer watch the show. I’m outraged that they would do this to the viewers that watch everyday and love Victor. That isnt a show without Victor. This isnt the first show I watch that CBS has done this to. I’m thru with CBS.
Today, Victor records his video for his daughter that is really his grandaughter detailing his dramatic life. Towards the end of the video, he says goodbye and blows a kiss. That is the first moment that I realized it was the end of a television icon and the end of a life-long legacy. What CBS doesn’t realize is that memories and strong bonds translate deaper than those that we interact with in our daily lives, but bonds are also established from creative characters that have a gift to pierce deep and allow us to be removed from our daily lives of stress if even for an hour.
I understand that we are living in a time of financial distress; however, being in a powerful position comes with great responsiblities. One of those responsiblities requires you to make decisions that are wise in nature. If there is a financial need to reduce the salaries of employees, make the choice to cut a few uninfluential characters or reduce the salaries of the actors with fewer years on the show or less acting experience. Many fans have named a few suggestions.
I am shocked and disappointed; however, I have never known a show that has been able to transform the neggative image of a character into one that we like. Now it’s time for you to transform the image of y&r and CBS. You know what to do…

I CANNOT believe what all has happened on Y&R since the passing of William Bell. All I have to say is CBS and Y&R ratings will plummet! As someone stated, Victor is what made Y&R what it is! I thought the wednesday, thursday episodes were trying to tell me that Victor Newman is leaving… I have been watching this soap opera since the 80’s. CBS has always been my channel. Now, I hope your company and Eric Braeden can work out a deal and bring him back…. Is the whole show Y&R on the brinks. Nikki Newman can’t hold the show by herself especially since viewers always knew they belong together. Now with Ashley Abbott at the ranch the storyline sucks, sucks hard. Who would ever believe that both Nikki and Victor would willingly hand over the ranch. The Ranch is where it all began. Over the years the changes have been hard to adjust to but I could always count on the throwback to Nikki and Victor to keep it on track. Please, Please Please save the show and keep the original Victor Newman, Eric Braeden. I am afraid I will loose this show just like the Guiding Light.

I am sadden that CBS had decided not to renue Eric’s contract. I am not sure they are ready for the aftermath of their decision. I have watch the Y&R for years to many to tell. But when you have ridiculous story lines such as the Ashley, Sharon and Adam drama. Are you serious thinking your audience is stuptid? We aren’t. How many mothers who have given birth to a child and just get up and not have a doctor check just for general purposes? That was such a far fetched story line. Adam is the devil in the flesh. Why would continue to allow a story line which cheapens everything related to ones family. Please reconsider your current story lines. You are losing a lot of valued customers because of your refusal to renew contract and your curren story lines.

Victor Newman is the heart of The Young & The Restless, and if he is cut out because of the attacks/tactics of the heads at Sony then that show will surely die.
When someone basically helps you to create a brand and makes you richer then you should reward that person by enriching them to in return. There is such a thing as loyalty…or has Sony forgotten that little tad. Eric has worked hard and been beyond loyal to this company, and the charactor that he’s played for nearly 30 years is iconic.
I hope that someone wakes up and fixes this mess before it’s too late. -Kevin C.
I just can’t believe that CBS would bark over some fraction of the money they make with Y&R, in order to force out one of what has become, the most signature of the shows main people!!!! What is wrong with a network that would treat Eric B. like that, is the exact same thing that is wrong with those in power of sports teams (& certain sports players themselves) that stop caring about the fans that made those teams, & start caring more about a difference in fiscal consideration that is not overwhelming. Y&R can go on, sans Victor, but I should not have to. What is going to carry them for awhile, for all those Victor N. fans of Y&R, is the wishful thinking that Vicotr is going to somehow return. Based on the above interview, it does not seem so. A short company memory, for who has carried them, is always the first sign of a company’s downfall in the marketplace. By the way…..I also think it is funny that if Sony is behind this “slap in the face” to the many Y&R fans that count the moments on the show, by when Victor is going to appear next, than it is amazing that Sony is a company that hails from a country that is said to hold respect for the elders of a company at very high regard. Taking the Black Knight (Victor Newman) off the Young & Restless is about a dumb as it gets. The story lines with Adam and Billy and some of the young people have gotten so silly, when Victor and Nikki go so do I. The older ones on this show make it what it was (No.1). Get new writers and pay Victor. Cut out some of the silly nonsense. (Chip Monk) and keep the most important part of your show Victor Newman.

Well, well, well. I guess this is goodbye to a show I’ve been watching since it began. I have always loved Victor, even when he held Michael prisoner over his first wife, Julia. He was so dashing and handsome, that me, along with all of my friends who watched, fell in love with him. That was a long time ago. I’ll be ending my love affair with Y&R after Victor leaves. He has become Y&R! Ask anyone if they watch Y&R, and they’ll say something like, “Yeah, how about Victor Newman!!” Oh well, so long Y&R. I loved you for long time, and, as they say, everything must end.

Young and the Restless without Victor Newman is about as dumd as a football team without a quarterback. I’ve been watchin this show faithfully for 17 years and Victor is what got me hooked. He is the epitomy of a gangster and the textbook of what a true business mogul should be. Many can relate to his long love affair with Nikki. Trust me CBS when I tell you that you have lost many many fans with this move!! I won’t be watching anymore because what’s here to watch? Lilly and Caine? NO!!!! Adam getting with Sharon? NO!!!! With Victor and Nikki Newman gone who needs to watch the show. Will Sharon and Ashley ever find out, Ashley lost her baby early in pregnancy and that Faith is Nicholas and Sharon’s baby. Will the show ever confront all the lousy things Adam has done? Why don’t they try Adam in court and send him to jail for a long time and never bring him back. Get rid of Gloria and her husband.
The show has for the past year or so lost its creative edge, delivering such outlandish plots devices as the silver chipmunk, the switch of Sharon’s baby to Ashley, the ridiculous Patti Williams scenario and more. The first Adam knew what he was doing when he left after they tried to make him “gay”- another stupid move.
Now Lilly, who’s not yet recovered from chemo, is rushing a surrogate pregnancy – a great example for others! How much narrative crap can one show shove down our throats and expect us to stay tuned? Hey CBS your Young & Restless, which is actually Old and Tired, has run its course. Better get a reality show to fill the time slot by 4Q 2010.
